Winery Visit- "First Colony Winery"

On Saturday, April 22, 2017, I went to First Colony Winery in Charlottesville, VA with my parents.  We had scheduled a winery tour, finishing with a tasting.  I have been to many wineries before but never have I had the chance to tour their facilities so I was very excited.

The beautiful First Colony Winery.

We arrived early in the morning and met our guide.  She led us into the distilling room, were the wines are fermented.  She began telling us a little of the history of First Colony Winery.  It opened in 1988 but didn’t immediately grow its own fruit for production, relying on fruit from Mount Domain, using old chardonnay vies for their wine.  After a few years they planted their own vines, but still use the old chardonnay from Mount Domain.  The winery is currently owned by two owners, Jeff Miller and the couple Heather and Bruce Spiess.  Our guide also told us about the winery building itself, mainly its beautiful thatched roofs, and an iconic feature of the winery.  The roofs were built by one of the three master thatcher’s in the U.S. and were made from imported Turkish water reeds into the 16 inch masterpiece.  The roof is often a desirable feature in weddings that are held at the winery, and one of the wines was named after the thatch roof.

Stainless still distilleries holding wine for fermentation.

Looking at the vineyards.

After concluding on the history of the winery, we were told of the processes involved in the First Colony Wineries production.  First Colony Winery grows half of their own fruit, and have wines with the grapes Merlot, Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, Chardonnay, Viognier, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Lemberger.  They have 12 and a half acres, but only 9 and a half are currently producing.  They get a yield of 3-4 tons per acre.  They have a satellite vineyard and have a private grower that provides the winery with their Viognier.  The wines are fermented in steel containers and then aged in oak.  The oak differs for the wine.  For example they have two chardonnay wines, where they age one chardonnay in stainless steel and the other in French oak.  They use both French and American in their other wines.

A stack of American and French oaked wines.

I asked our guide about bottling and the future plans for the winery, and both answers were surprising.  They do not bottle on site, but rather a bottling truck goes around the different wineries in the area.  They rent the truck for two days and bottle their supplies, before it goes on to the next winery.  I found this really cool, as it took the stress out of maintaining the equipment for the winery and just seemed like a really inventive idea in a winery studded area.  The future plans that First Colony had were just as exciting, the winery was starting to create wines on tap.  This is where they would open up a few barrels and have costumers taste directly from the barrels, filling and possibly blending wines to their own taste on site.  I hope to come back after they have officially opened this service and try wines straight from the barrel they have been aging in.

After this I started asking about the awards the winery has won, which have been numerous.
A selection of the FCW wine series and the various ribbons that adorn them.

The First Colony Winery promotes two series of wine, the FCW series and the 1607 Reserve series.  The reserve series is named after various elements around the winery, including, as mentioned before, the thatch wine.  Other elements include a fishing lure for the Silver Doctor, a weather vane for the Petit Manseng.  They won the top 3 white wines in the 2015 Montgomery Trail Cup.  They won the 2016 Rose Silver in the Montgomery Trail Cup, and won the 2015 for their Estate Reserve.  This is only a few of their awards, as seen by their many medals.  Not only is this winery well awarded for their great wines, but they have also won the award for being Virginia’s favorite tasting room, two years in a row!  Seeing how friendly everyone there was, I can’t help but agree.

At the end of the tour we sampled 12 different wines form the FCW and Reserve collections.

·       FCW Rose 2016: This delicate wine smelled of raspberries, and was very floral and sweet.  The taste was smooth on my palette and tangy, with raspberry and hints of lime.  I really enjoyed this wine.

·       FCW Riesling 2015: This wine used traditional capitalization, adding fruit juice after fermentation to add sugar content to the wine.  The smell was rather buttery and the wine tasted of lemons and had a fresh, tangy finish.

·       FCW Chardonnay 2014: This wine was fermented in stainless steel and had its fruit taken from Mount Domain, which has 40 year old vines planted in 1974.  The wine smelled clean and crisp, which was mirrored in the crisp, lemony taste of the wine, though the wine was slightly sour with a tangy aftertaste.

·       FCW Viognier 2015: This wine smelled of peaches and apricots.  It was a crisp, lemony wine with a sweet undertone in the finish.

·       Estate Chardonnay 2014: This was aged in new French oak.  The wine smelled buttery and had a lemon, mutter, earthy taste.

·       FCW Petit Manseng 2015: This had a high alcohol content of 15.8%, giving it a hot component.  This wine smelled fresh and floral, with a lot of tropical fruit notes.  The wine was very delicate and tangy, with many tropical fruits on the tongue, and a hot finish.

·       FCW Meritage 2015: This wine smelled of carnations, cherries, blackberries and pepper.  The wine was tannin heavy with components of cherries, blackberries and pepper.

·       FCW Lemberger 2015: This wine smelled of lighter fruits and earth.  The taste was mossy and foresty, with heavy tannins, pepper, earth, cherries.  I had some herbal spread on a piece of toast, which immediately softened the flavors, making it sweeter.  It had a cherry finish.

·       Silver Doctor 2014: This wine was remarkably dark purple in color.  Made from 18 months French oak, with American put in every now and then, the Silver Doctor is relatively new wine to the winery, but has been very popular.  The smell was very floral, full of blackberries, raspberries, plums and roses.  It tasted of plums, blackberries and had medium tannins with a pepper finish.  It was my favorite of the reds we tried.

·       FCW Claret 2014: This sweet, cherry smelling wine was a true blush, a mix of white and red grapes went into making it.  The taste was very sweet, delicate and full of raspberries.  I enjoyed this wine very much.

·       FCW Totier Creek White 2014: A very sweet smelling wine, full of notes of pears and apricots.  The taste was crisp and full of pears and honey.  This was my favorite of the wines we tasted.  In fact it was the wine I bought as my souvenir of our trip.

·       Thatch: So named after their amazing thatch roof, this wine is part of the Reserve series.  The bottle was a Tortuga bottle, like in Pirates of the Caribbean.  The smell was rather like cough syrup, very sweet.  As characteristic of a fortified wine.  The smell was also of cherries and plums.  The wine tasted like cherries, plums and sugar, with a hot finish.

I throughly enjoyed my experience during this tour.  It made me a die hard FCW fan and I can not wait to come back to this beautiful winery and its friendly. engaging staff.  I highly recommend going to visit this winery and trying every single one of their lovely wines (especially the Claret and Totier).  I hope next time I visit the vines are full of fruit.  I hope I have convinced you as well to go visit the First Colony Winery.
One last glass of wine before the road.

Tasting-"Cantina di Casteggio Provinicia di Pavia Moscato"

Name: Cantina di Casteggio Provinicia di Pavia Moscato
Variety: Moscato
Region: Lombardy
Country: Italy
Year: N/A
Price: Regular $10, Sale $7.95

Winery Review: This fun dessert wine has delicate aromas of citrus, tropical fruit and fragrant white flower. The bright foaming palate offers juicy yellow peach, candied nectarine zest and a hint of rose. It's sweet, but it also has enough fresh acidity to stop it from being cloying. Perfect for the afternoon, weekend, or any other time.

My Review: This wine had a complex aroma of lychee, guava, passionfruit, and nectarine, a very tropical and floral bouquet.  The taste was very sweet with nectarine, honey and sugar, very smooth on the palette.  I drank this wine along and enjoyed it immensely and personally would drink it alone anytime as a dessert wine.

Tasting-"Oxford Landing Shiraz 2014"

Name: Oxford Landing Shiraz 2014
Variety: Shiraz
Region: South Australia
Country: Australia
Year: 2014
Price: $9.95

Winery Review: 88- Wine Enthusiast  -Best Buy
For such a competitively priced offering, this delivers a lot of complexity. Dried herbs, anise, chocolate and coffee notes add nuance to the raspberry fruit. It's medium bodied and supple, with a lush, lingering finish. Drink now–2020.

My Review: This wine smelled like fresh cut grass and dark berries.  The wine was dry with spicy-clove, cherries and tannic components.  Not a very complex wine, very hot cherries overall.  Should be paired with a red meat based meal.

Tasting-" Indwe Pinotage 2015 Frontline"

Name: Indwe Pinotage 2015 Frontline
Variety: Pinotage
Region: Coastal South Africa
Country: South Africa
Year: 2015
Price: Regular $12, Sale $8.95

Winery Review: Parker has yet to review the 2015 vintage but said in the past..
“A disclaimer: I have never cared much for Pinotage, the indigenous South African grape variety, but this Pinotage from Indwe, named after the country's national bird, the blue crane, comes across like a light Pinot Noir. Subtle notes of cherries, spice and forest floor are followed by a round, light to medium-bodied, pure, seductive, well-crafted wine that should drink well for a year or so.”

My Review: The aroma was very jammy, full of notes of toffee and blackberries.  The wine was hot and dry, with heavy tannins.  Components of cherries and raspberries were most prominent in this wine.  This wine would pair well with a nice steak.

Tasting-"Aveleda Praia Vinho Verde"

Name: Aveleda Praia Vinho Verde
Variety: 40% Arinto, 30% Loureiro, 20% Trajadura and 10% Azul
Region: Vinho Verde
Country: Portugal
Year: N/A
Price: $8.95

Winery Review: 92 – Wine & Spirits
It's rare to find a Vinho Verde – the famously light and refreshing "green" white wine of Portugal – that isn't delightful, but this is one of the best of the breed. And there's no better time to quaff these wines than in the spring and summer. This version is lightly effervescent, with a lively acidity that wakes up the palate. It combines lime and peach flavors with a whiff of sea breeze. Somehow it manages to be both ethereal and penetrating.

My Review:  This wine smelled very floral and like banana nut bread.  The wine had a tangy, crisp taste, full of citrus flavors such as lemon and lime.  The wine had a sweet undertone and finish.  A very good stand-alone wine, it would pair well with fish or chicken based meals that have a lighter sauce.

Tasting-"Kennedy Point Sauvignon Blanc 2014"

Name: Kennedy Point Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Marlborough
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2014
Price: Regular $22, Sale $9.95

Winery Review: 88 Points – Robert Parker
This 2014 Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand's Marlborough area offers outstanding value. Crisp and fresh with a hint of herbaceousness intermixed with notes of wet pebbles, melon and caramelized citrus, it is medium-bodied, surprisingly long and very well-crafted.

My Review: This wine had an aroma of green apples, pears and celery, a fresh and crisp scent.  The wine was dry with flavors of green apple.  It was hot and very citrusy and crisp.  This wine would go great with a fish based meal.

Tasting-"Clean Slate Riesling"

Name: Clean Slate Riesling
Variety: Riesling
Region: Mosel
Country: Germany
Year: 2015
Price: Regular $15, Sale $9.95
Winery Review: The balanced taste profile of Clean Slate is created by carefully selecting grapes from vineyards throughout the Mosel. Grapes from the Lower Mosel provide mineral notes, while grapes from the Middle Mosel create a hint of spiciness and grapes from the Upper Mosel supply fresh, peach flavors. The result is clean, fresh flavor that is delicious with food and perfect to share with friends.

My Review: This wine sported a light aroma of pears and apples.  The wine was sweet with components of apples, pears and peaches, a very delicate fruity wine.  This wine is a great stand-alone wine to drink on its own.

Tasting-"Tabali Reserva Carmenere 2012"

Name: Tabali Reserva Carmenere 2012
Variety: Carmenere
Region: Cachapoal Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2012
Price: Regular $15, Sale $7.95
Winery Review: Dark, statuesque wine with concentrated, potent aromas of black olive, herbs and mulled blackberry. Tastes like textbook Carmenère, but without any jammy over-ripeness. Flavor of racy spiced berry, olive and black pepper are all good, and there's that patented herbal, roasted quality on the finish, but not too much.

My Review: This wine smelled of spices, blackberries and black pepper.  The wine was very dry with high tannins, displaying components of black cherries, blackberries and black pepper, a very dark, jammy wine.  This wine needs to be paired with a fatty based meal to soften the spice and tannins and bring out the jammy flavors.

Tasting-"Yellowtail Shiraz Grenache 2015 1.5 Liter Magnum Frontline"

Name: Yellowtail Shiraz Grenache 2015 1.5 Liter Magnum Frontline
Variety: Grenache and Shiraz blend
Region: Casella
Country: Australia
Year: 2015
Price: Regular $14, Sale $5.95

Winery Review: A classic blend of Shiraz and Grenache, with the raspberries, blackcurrant, lliquorice and spice characteristics of the Shiraz complementing the upfront cherry and cola flavors of the Grenache. The balanced wine offers earthy tones, strawberry aromas and vibrant acidity.

My Review: This wine had an aroma like candied cherries and roses, very floral.  The wine was very dry and soft, with heavy tannins and a smooth finish.  The wine had characteristics of raspberries, cherries, black pepper and earth.  I enjoyed this wine but if I had it in the future I  would pair it with some cheese to soften the tannic components.

Tasting-"Closerie Saint Antoine Champ de Carra Viognier 2015"

Name: Closerie Saint Antoine Champ de Carra Viognier 2015
Variety: Viognier
Region: Languedoc
Country: France
Year: 2015
Price: Regular $13, Sale $6.95

Winery Review: Light yellow color with green reflection. At first, this Viognier exhibits some citrus and pine aromas, after some time in the glass, it develops peach and mango. In the mouth, it is quite lovely with a great fruit forward approach. It is intense and balanced at the same time. The finish is long and offers an array of flavors, such as ripe peach and pear with creamy, lemony nuances.

My Review:  This white wine had hints of peaches and mangoes on the nose, very tropical.  Lightly crisp and sweet, the tropical flavors were just as prominent on the palette, displaying peaches, lemon and crème.  This wine is good enough to stand on its own but would be wonderful being paired with a fish meal.

Tasting-"Tabali Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2013"

Name: Tabali Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Limari Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2013
Price: Regular $15, Sale $7.95

Winery Review: 89 Points – Robert Parker
The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Reserva is un-oaked and without malolactic, from a selection from the Talinay vineyard and 20% from the Tabali vineyard. It has an herbaceous note of asparagus and peas, a chalky sensation, and a fresh palate with bitter and citric flavors. It’s a superb value.

My Review: This wine had a light citrus aroma with hints of sweet nuts and sweet peas.  The wine was lightly sweet and citrusy with components of peach, sweet peas and a lime finish.  This wine could stand alone or be paired with a fish based meal.

Winery Review: Off-dry with a slight fizz, offering bright berry and mineral notes. Medium-bodied, with a clean, fresh palate and fruity finish. This is a rare, sweet red wine that is wonderful with desserts such as dry pastries, cookies and cakes.

My Review: This sparkling wine was a rich dark purple color, with an aroma of vanilla and plums.  Crisply sweet, this wine tasted of plums, flowers and had a sweet finish that lingered on the tongue.  I enjoyed this wine stand alone and would drink it alone or with any meal.

Tasting-"Alvarez de Toledo Mencia Roble 2009 Frontline"

Variety: Mencia
Region: Bierzo
Country: Spain
Year: 2009
Prices: $14, Sale $8.95

Winery Review: 91 Points – Robert Parker
“The 2009 Alvarez de Toledo was bottled just a week before the wine was presented but seems to be showing no symptoms of distress. Balsamic, leather, and black fruits are the principal notes struck by this suave effort that over-delivers in a big way. Like its older sibling, it can be enjoyed now but will have more to say in 2-3 years.”

My Review: This wine smelled like kettle corn and dried cranberries.  The wine was very soft with heavy tannins and a distinct cranberry flavor.  The finish was very spicy, like black pepper.  This wine should be paired with a fatty meal to bring out the flavors of the wine.

Tasting-"Codirosso Chianti 2015"

Prices: $13, Sale $7.95

Winery Review: (For the 2014 review. The 2015 has yet to be reviewed) 87 Points – Robert parker
A heck of a value in Chianti, this delicious blend of 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino offers up notes of licorice, new saddle leather, black cherry and berry fruit, loamy soil undertones and a touch of pepper and herbs. It is medium-bodied, savory and best drunk over the next several years."

My Review: This wine smelled heavily of vanilla and toffee.  The wine was very soft on the palette with a spicy finish.  The taste had components of black cherries, dirt and was heavy with tannins.  This wine needs to be paired with a fatty meal to soften the tannins.

"The 2015 Chenin Blanc offers loads of melony fruit interspersed with hints of honeysuckle and peach. It is delicious, crisp, fresh, lively, and a dead ringer for a good Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. Drink it over the next year."

My Review: This wine smelled of mangoes and caramel.  The wine was very acidic, with citrus components, with lime standing out.  The finish was very acidic and crisp.  I believe this wine would go very well with cheese to smooth out the acidic touch.

This wine is soft and rounded. It has lemon and light spiciness along with cool acidity. It is an easy wine that is ripe with apple and fresh lemon juice and ready to drink.

My Review: This wine has an aroma of pears and apples with a hint of mint.  It is a dry wine with grassy/herbal and citrus characteristics, full of pear and lime flavor.  It had a delicate and smooth finish.  This wine is a nice stand-alone wine that I think could go well with a chicken meal if I was to pair it with food.

Tasting- "Vinedos Real Rubio Rioja Crianza 2010 Tempranillo, Graciano Frontline"

Variety: Tempranillo
Region: Rioja
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Prices: Regular $16, Sale $9.95

Winery Review: 90 Points – Wine Enthusiast
Lightly baked berry aromas vie for attention with leather, spice and mild earth notes, and the result is disjointed. On the palate, this is tight as a drum initially, but more expansive as it unfolds. Cherry, plum, raspberry, vanilla and woodspice flavors finish pure, clean and easy. This is a fine yet manageable Rioja that’s not trying too hard. Drink through 2016.

My Review: This wine had a lovely aroma of roses, cherries and beats, very floral and fruity.  The wine had a heavy tannin structure with a slight spice finish, like cherry black tea.  The texture was dry and soft.  I tasted cherries and a blend of dark berries.  This wine would pair well with a steak.

Region: Beira
Country: Portugal

Prices: Regular $12, Sale $7.95

Winery Review: 86 Points – Wine Enthusiast Best Buy
From vineyards at 2000 feet elevation, this is a rich and spicy wine that has a pure streak of fruit freshness and a firmly tannic core. It is perfumed from Touriga Nacional in the blend, with red berry and black plum flavors coming through strongly along, balanced by acidity. It will be better from 2017.

My Review: The red wine blend smelled distinctly of blackberries, black cherries and plums.  The wine was dry and soft on the palette, the same berries detected on the nose present in the taste.  I also tasted wood and dirt, adding to the complexity.  I feel this wine would go well with pasta or a red meat based meal.

The 2014 Ribolla Gialla shows more minerality, nice quince, white currant and citrus oil notes, a dry, refreshing mouthfeel and a fragrant bouquet.

My Review: This white wine had a very floral and sweet fruit aroma, with hints of pears and kiwis.  The wine was very crisp with a sweet finish.  The wine was slightly dry, and had components of apples and flowers.  A sharp sour twist of kiwi added complexity.  I liked this wine very much and would like to pair it with a light meal, with either fish or chicken.

My Review:  This wine had an aroma of nuts, pears, honey, and a strange musty, almost wet dog smell.  The wine itself had components of sweet nuts and pears, with a light, soft ginger finish.  I had this wine on its own and feel it could stand alone, but would pair well with some spicy or complex dish.

Winery Review: Pavia, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy where viticulture dates back thousands of years is home to the Si Pinot Grigio vineyards. The wine is creamy on the palate with a crisp, dry character, fresh citrus and pear flavors and an elegant finish.

My Review: This Pinot Grigio was a light yellow color.  It had aromas of apples and pears with a light floral undertone.  This wine was very light and crisp, full of citrus.  It had a delicate, smooth and sweet finish.  The main components I tasted were pears and apples.  I liked this wine very much, and would like to pair it with a food in the future.  I think it would go well with something spicy.

Tasting-"Primes Ruby Port Front Line"

Name: Primes Ruby Port Front Line
Variety: Blend
Region: Oporto
Country: Portugal
Year: N/A
Price: Regular $18, Sale $9.95

Winery Review: Ruby color; red fruit aromas; pleasantly sweet and balanced taste. As the wines used to produce Prime's Ruby Port age, they gain smoothness and elegance while retaining their fruitiness, intensity and youthful ruby color. They are then blended together for balance and consistency.

My Review: This wine had a dark red color and smelled like cranberry and toffee.  The alcohol was very prominent, as was the sweetness.  This wine tasted like raisins and raspberries, with a smooth finish.  This wine would make a good desert wine to have after a meal.

Winery Review: Medium red in color with ruby hues. On the nose aromas of dark red berries, blackcurrants and ripe plums while the palate is medium bodied, with dark red berries and a soft tannic finish.

My Review: A nice red colored wine, this wine had a strong aroma of tomatoes and pepper with wood elements.  This wine was dry and tart with a light tannin quality.  It had components of cherry, blackberries and boysenberry.  The wine had a hot finish.  I believe if I was to have this wine again I would have to pair it with food.

Tasting-"Domaine du Poujol Coteaux du Languedoc Grenache Cinsault 2011"

Name: Domaine du Poujol Coteaux du Languedoc Grenache Cinsault 2011
Variety: Grenache and Cinsault blend
Region: Southeastern Australia
Country: Australia
Year: 2011
Price: Regular $13, Sale $5.95

Winery Review: Minerally and berry notes make for a savory blend of flavors in this fine-grained red. Dried berry fruit dominates, with accents of white pepper and dill seed. Delivers lively acidity on the finish. Drink now through 2018.

My Review: This light colored red wine had a strong aroma of cherries and plums, almost like a jam.  This wine had flavors of pepper, cherries.  It was a dry wine with heavy tannin, like a cherry black tea.  It was not an unpleasant wine but it was not for me.  I did not pair this wine with food but I think it should go with something fatty to break up the tannin, like a nice steak.

Tasting-"Pazo de Monterrey Godello 2014"

Name: Pazo de Monterrey Godello 2014
Variety: Godello
Region: Monterrei
Country: Spain
Year: 2014
Price: Regular $15, Sale $5.95

Winery Review: Clean, minerally, slightly green in aromatics and oh so approachable and nice. For an under-$15 white, this Godello from Monterrei excels with layered flavors of apple, minerals and natural spice. The finish is long and hints at fresh herbs like thyme and tarragon. Potentially superb with garlic shrimp or calamari over fresh greens.

My Review:  This honey colored wine had a light aroma of honeysuckle.  The taste of alcohol was strong, accentuated with components of lime and pears, crisply acidic.  The wine was very delicate with a smooth finish.  I did not pair this wine with food but it could go well with a fishy meal.

Winery Review:  85– Wine Enthusiast Best Buy
In color, this is almost white. There is some attractive acidity and the soft wine will slip down easily with just a touch of red currant. The result is a lightly mineral wine that is refreshing and good for an apéritif.

My Review:   This wine was an amber color, with a pear and cider like aroma.  The taste was very dry and tart, a very acidic wine.  The wine had a strange sweet aftertaste that appeared after swallowing.  It was a very interesting wine.  I did not have any food with this wine but I think it could stand alone or be paired with a chicken or fish meal.

Name: Coastal Vines White Zinfandel Magnum Front Line
Variety: Zinfandel
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: Regular $15, Sale $5.95

Winery Review: Coastal Vines White Zinfandel is a light and fruity salmon-pink wine. Sweet, floral aromas of jasmine and roses burst into bright flavors of apricots, cantaloupe, and orange blossoms.

My Review: This rose wine had an aroma of Hibiscuses’ and honeysuckle, very light and floral.  This sweet wine was a meld of kiwi, apricot and honey on the palette with floral overtones and a slightly dry finish.  I enjoyed this wine very much and brought it home with me.  I look forward to seeing how the flavors change when pairing it with food.

Tasting- "Cortenova Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2013"

Name: Cortenova Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2013
Variety: Montepulciano
Region: d'Abruzzo
Country: Italy
Year: 2013
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: Wild berry, chopped mint, sun baked earth and violet aromas meld together on this solid savory red. The juicy straightforward palate doles out ripe black cherry, crushed raspberry, anise and cinnamon alongside chewy tannins.

My Review:   This dark red wine smelled heavily of red cherries, almost like cough syrup.  This wine was very spicy, like cinnamon.  It was dry, hot and bitter, with a burning finish.  This wine did not taste like wine but rather like a cherry whiskey, very heavy on the alcohol.  This would definitely need to be served with a meal.
